Emmett Kelly is probably the most famous circus clown ever. I would say the most famous clown anywhere – but Bozo the Clown had his own television show and I think that that probably gives him an edge. But if you love clowns with sad faces that evoke emotion, Emmett Kelly is probably the clown that you think of most often.

I love clown statues throughout my home for the color and emotion that they bring forth. I often incorporate a clown statue into my birthday celebrations and table centerpieces. They coordinate so beautifully with balloons, cake and flowers.

I have also had Halloween parties, where I’ve asked everyone to dress up like a clown and to wear clown makeup. That’s an easy costume, because you can find a lot of clown costume elements in your own wardrobe. Big shoes are probably the exception, but not all clowns were clown shoes. A variation that I’ve been considering for this year is to have everyone wear cocktail outfits and clown faces. Yes, I will probably wear a tuxedo with an Emmet Kelly face. I am a huge fan of his clown performances. I’ll use clown statues as place settings with the name of the person on a card in front.
